INTERNSHIP AT ROOM
At ROOM we nurture a genuine passion for mentoring junior stylists and helping them grow their careers. We are an accredited work placement company, recognized by the SBB. Over the years we’ve welcomed countless trainees; many chose to stay with us after completing their training. Each year we make ROOM for new interns to join our team in both our locations in The Hague centre and in Westfield Mall of The Netherlands, Leidschendam. Your internship at ROOM
An internship at ROOM is hands-on from day one. You’ll be part of the salon team, work alongside our stylists and get to experience what it’s really like to work in a busy, professional hair salon.
Your day starts with getting the salon ready and welcoming our first clients. From there, you’ll help out with different treatments, from washing and blow-drying to cutting, colouring, highlights and hair treatments. You’ll learn by watching, doing and asking questions. And as you get more comfortable, you’ll gradually take on more yourself, always with guidance from the team.
You’ll also spend a lot of time talking to clients. Because our clientele is international, you’ll naturally get plenty of opportunities to use English in real conversations. It’s very different from learning English at school — you’re actually using it every day, with real clients and in real situations. Before you know it, you’ll be building your confidence and communication skills faster than you ever could in a classroom.
We want you to get as much out of your internship as possible. That means you’ll have regular one-on-one coaching and training that matches your level and what you want to learn next. We also work with L’Oréal, giving you access to product training and workshops alongside your day-to-day experience in the salon.
And of course, you’ll be part of the ROOM team. It’s a friendly, close-knit group where you can ask questions, try things out, make mistakes and keep improving. The goal is simple: by the end of your internship, you’ll have gained real salon experience, stronger technical skills, more confidence and a much better idea of where you want to go as a stylist.
Meet one of our trainees, Natasha
Natasha started working with us as an intern this year at our location in The Hague, and has decided to stick with us to further her education. Let her briefly tell you about her experiences during her internship at ROOM.
How did you start your internship at ROOM?
I knew a friend who was doing an internship at ROOM that was really enjoying it, so I asked if there was space for another intern too, which there was. I was really nervous at first, as the salon is so big and things worked just slightly differently from what I was used to. But I quickly found my place in the salon and ever since it’s really felt like a second home to me.
What makes ROOM a good place to do your internship?
I can just be completely myself at ROOM. The whole team is there for me when I’m struggling with something, and give constructive advice on how I can improve. I always feel the freedom to ask questions and feel fully supported when looking for help. The staff really feels like family to me, which is a big part of what makes my internship feel so great.
What was it like speaking English with so many clients?
At the start, I really struggled because my English has never been good. But when I started working there I began to notice how my English was improving every day. I speak English to both colleagues and clients now and feel completely comfortable with it.
Would you recommend an internship at ROOM?
Absolutely! You get amazing guidance in the salon, both with practical skills and theoretical knowledge. They offer great training evenings, which help you really gain more and more experience. You’ll really find your own little spot in this team, which is beautiful.
